2010 All-TCCC Baseball Team Announced

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 28, 2010) - Student-athletes from ten different institutions in The Commonwealth Coast Conference were represented on the 2010 All-TCCC Baseball Team, it was announced today by Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye. In addition to the all-conference team, winners of five major individual awards and the team sportsmanship award were also selected.

Curry senior Tim Sweeney was selected TCCC Player of the Year, Curry senior Cory Moore was named TCCC Pitcher of the Year, Eastern Nazarene freshman Joel Torres was chosen TCCC Rookie of the Year, Wentworth’s Pete Oggeri was honored as TCCC Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year, Endicott’s Bryan Haley selected as TCCC Coach of the Year, and Colby-Sawyer College was the recipient of the Team Sportsmanship Award.

Voting for the All-TCCC team and each of the major awards was conducted among TCCC baseball coaches.

Joining Sweeney (outfield) and Moore on the first team were catcher Brad Hawn (Curry), first baseman Joe Griglun (Western New England), second baseman Jake McManus (Wentworth), third baseman Chris Hartery (Colby-Sawyer), shortstop Alexander Melcher (Salve Regina), outfielders Riley Diaz (Salve Regina) and Jeff Scafidi (Anna Maria), designated hitter Tony Luciani (Curry), and pitchers Benjamin Petrides (Endicott), Matt Rogers (Western New England), and Chris Sandini (Wentworth).

Second team selections included Oggeri (catcher), first baseman Luke Matthews (Eastern Nazarene), second baseman Eric Lemke (Endicott), third baseman Tony Trubia (Western New England), shortstop Stephen Kefalas (Gordon), outfielders Jesse Bruinsma (Curry), Ralph Fidaleo (Endicott), Zac Johnson (Nichols), designated hitter Nate Leaser (Eastern Nazarene), and pitchers Kevin Dupras (Endicott), Rob Hinckley (Gordon), and Kevin Jefferis (Western New England).

Receiving honorable mention were Torres (shortstop), catcher Jason Leclerc (Western New England), first baseman Rick Vail (Curry), second baseman Charles Matarazzo (Salve Regina) and David Stevens (Curry), third baseman Mike Diodato (Wentworth), shortstop Greg Mehuron (Colby-Sawyer), outfielders Sean Jackman (Curry), Matt Jordan (Wentworth), Danny Rodriguez (Eastern Nazarene) and Victor Torres (Eastern Nazarene), designated hitters Ryan Dudzinski (Western New England) and Aaron Santos (Endicott), pitchers Mo Gardner (Wentworth), John Kanas (Gordon), Nick Kelley (Endicott), Mike Lawlor (Western New England) and Craig Silva (Salve Regina).

Sweeney, a senior outfielder from Walpole, Mass., was the catalyst for a potent Colonel lineup which led the league in conference-only play in runs scored, batting average, doubles, and stolen bases. Sweeney had a tremendous year ranking first in TCCC play in numerous statistical categories including; batting average (.531), slugging percentage (.790), on-base percentage (.560), hits (43), runs scored (36), RBI’s (34), doubles (10), and total bases (64).

Moore, a senior from Lynn, Mass., posted a 1.80 ERA and a 3-0 record with a pair of complete games in conference-only play, striking out 24 in so innings of work. Moore continued his excellence in non-conference play, entering TCCC postseason action with an overall record of 5-0 and a stellar 1.10 ERA in 41 innings pitched. His overall ERA of 1.10 was good for the top spot among all TCCC pitchers.

Torres, a freshman shortstop from the Bronx, N.Y., sparked a resurgent Lions club that snatched the #6 seed in the conference tournament. Torres tied for the league lead with five home run’s in conference play and also ranked in the top-ten in several offensive categories; batting .419 (8th), with 31 hits (7th), 51 total bases (5th), 25 runs scored (4th), and 10 stolen bases (4th).

Oggeri, a senior catcher from Sandy Hook, Conn., excelled both on the field and in the classroom for the Leopards. While achieving a 3.34 GPA in Construction Management, the standout catcher batted .348 with three homeruns, 23 RBI, and 21 runs scored in conference-only play. Oggeri made his mark at Wentworth as the school’s all-time leader in home runs, runs scored, total bases, and stolen bases. He also ranks top-5 in games played, hits and RBI entering TCCC postseason play.

In his third season at the helm of the Endicott baseball program, Haley has led the Gulls to a 17-5 mark in TCCC play and share of the regular season title. Endicott, who was tabbed to finish fourth in the preseason coaches’ poll, enters the conference tournament with a 25-13 overall record which is just three wins short of the all-time school record.
