2008 All-TCCC Men's Soccer Team Announced 10/31/2008

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 31, 2008) - Student-athletes from 12 different institutions in The Commonwealth Coast Conference were represented on the 2008 All-TCCC Men’s Soccer Team, it was announced today by Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye. In addition to the all-conference team, four major individual award winners and the team sportsmanship award winner were also selected. Western New England College senior Dale Totman was named TCCC Player of the Year, Roger Williams University freshman Archie Maoh was chosen TCCC Rookie of the Year, Colby-Sawyer College’s Patrick Benson was honored as TCCC Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year, Curry College’s Peter Mendel was honored as TCCC Coach of the Year and Eastern Nazarene College was the recipient of the Team Sportsmanship Award.
Voting for the All-TCCC team and each of the major awards was conducted among TCCC men’s soccer coaches.
Joining forward Totman on the first team were forwards Matt Horth (Gordon) and Ben Radzicki (Curry), midfielders Alex Clark (Salve Regina), Dan Hare (Western New England), Peter Koskores (New England College) and Daniele Saccoccio (Roger Williams), backs J.J. Hallisey (Curry), Ardy Jagne (Roger Williams) and Jim Maples (Western New England), and goalkeeper Brian Newsome (Curry).
Second team selections included George Markopoulos (Anna Maria), Jason Sabia (Western New England), Jeff Shea (Curry) and Dean Smith (New England College), midfielders Alex Dos Santos (Western New England), Eric Goldberg (Univ. of New England) and Kyle Nasman (Wentworth), backs Ian Coorssen (New England College), Nick Hanlon (Gordon) and Kiel Hiller (Univ. of New England), and goalkeeper Jon Mayo (New England College).
Receiving honorable mention were forwards Maoh, Doug Currie (Colby-Sawyer), Brian Dill (Western New England), Jared Falconer (Roger Williams) and David Johnson (Nichols), midfielders Clayton Corto (Curry), Ben Hamlin (Wentworth), Joel Spruance (Gordon) and Matt Boyle (Curry), backs Ian Downing (Wentworth), Marco Gomes (Western New England), Bryan Lee (Endicott), Justin Plourde (Roger Williams) and Kevin Zimbal (Western New England), and goalkeeper Peter Plate (Roger Williams).
Totman, a native of Conway, Mass, is an integral part of a Western New England attack that posted the conference’s best regular-season record for the second consective year (9-0-4 TCCC, 13-1-5 overall). Totman currently leads 15th-ranked WNEC in two major offensive categories, having chalked up 10 goals and 26 total points, to go along with six assists, second on the squad.
Maoh, a product of Monrovia, Liberia has been a solid addition to an already strong Roger Williams club that finished second in the league during the regular season (9-1-3 TCCC, 10-4-3 overall). The newcomer currently leads the Hawks in all three major offensive catgories with six goals (tied), seven assists and 19 total points. His play in TCCC play has been equally impressive, as he tops his team with five goals, five assists and 15 total points.
Benson, a native of Essex, Vt., has been a standout both in the classroom and on the field throughout his career at Colby-Sawyer. Academically, Benson sports an impressive 3.85 GPA as a double-major in Exercise Science and Biology. A member of numerous national and institutional honor societies, Benson has been a back line standout for the Chargers for four years. The co-captain has started in 71 career games.
Mendel, in his second season at Curry, has authored a tremendous turnaround for the Colonels. Following a 2007 season which saw his team place seventh in the conference with a 5-4-3 TCCC mark and a 7-10-3 overall record, Mendel piloted Curry to a 14-3-3 overall record, including a 9-2-2 slate in TCCC play. The Colonels enter TCCC tournament play as the number three seed, having finished just two points out of first place.
